EndNote overview

EndNote is a bibliographic reference management tool. 

EndNote and Mendeley assist the researcher in the importing of bibliographic references once you hae searched and found the relevant one(s).

EndNote allow the researcher to create groups.

The 'Cite While You Write' plugin which links MS Word and EndNote will assist the researcher to add citations and create bibliographies.

How to import PDFs into EndNote

EndNote allows you to import a PDF or a folder of PDFs into your library with all the bibliographic information extracted automatically, under the condition that the PDFs have DOIs embedded. How to import a PDF? Here are the steps:

  • Open your EndNote library.
  • Under the File menu, choose Import.
  • If it is a single PDF, choose File; if it is a collection of PDFs placed in a folder, then choose Folder.
  • In the Import File or Import Folder popup window, retrieve the PDF file or folder and click OK.
  • Make sure the Import Option is PDF. You can choose Import All (can dedup later).
  • Clicking on the Import button, all the PDFs will be imported into EndNote.

Note: If the PDF file was scanned or it does not have a DOI assigned, then it will not be successfully imported. All it has will be an attachment to an empty record.

How to create a formatted bibliography

  • In your EndNote library, choose the desired style on the upper left corner of the screen.
  • Highlight the references you want to include in the list.
  • Go to Edit menu, click Copy Formatted.
  • Open Word and create a blank document.
  • Right click and Paste in the bland document.

A reading list formatted in the pre-defined style is thus created

How to import references from the databases

  • Performed a search in PubMed
  • On the search results page, select the desired references.
  • Click on "Send to" downarrow; a Choose Destination popup window appears.
  • Choose "Citation Manager"
  • Click on the Create File button
  • A citations.nbib will be placed at the lower left corner.
  • Click on the .nbib file. You will be asked to choose destination: EndNote or EndNote Online?
  • Choose EndNote and the selected references will be placed in your library. The default library is the one you last worked with. If that is not your desired library, please choose a different one.

Import references from CINAHL

 

  • Perform a search in CINAHL via EBSCOhost.
  • On the search results page, select the desired references by clicking the folers on the right side of the screen.
  • Then click the open folder icon on the top of the screen.
  • Click in the box next to Select/deselect All to include all the selected references.
  • On the right hand of the screen, click on Export.
  • On the next Export Manager page, under "Save citations to a file formatted for: ", click in the radio button for Direct Export in RIS Format. Then click the Save button of the left side.
  • A delivery.ris file will be placed at the lower left corner of the screen.
  • Click on the .ris file. The selected references will be imported into your library.

Import references from the Web of Science

  • Perform a search in Web of Science.
  • On the search results page, select the desired references.
  • On the top of the results screen, choose Save to EndNote desktop.
  • In the next Save to EndNote popup window, click the down arrow and choose either Full Record or Full Record and Cited References.
  • Click on the Send button. A savedrecs.ciw file will be placed at the lower left corner of the screen.
  • Click on the .ciw file. You will be asked to choose destination: EndNote or EndNote Online?
  • Choose EndNote and the selected references will be imported into your library.

How to create a group

  • Open EndNote.
  • On the left Navigation pane, mouse over My Groups set.
  • Right click on My Groups and then choose Create Group.
  • The default name for the Group is New Group. You may rename the Group by right clicking  and choosing Rename Group.
  • Rename the group to a name of your choice. A group has thus been created.
  • Now you can drag selected references into the custom group.

How to Cite While You Write (CWYR)

  • Make sure the EndNote X9 tab is displayed in Word.
  • You may start your document by using one of the templates in EndNote (under the Tools menu) or you can start from scratch.
  • Write Reference at the bottom of the document so that all the cited references will be listed beneath that.
  • In your document, place the cursor where you want to insert in-text citations.
  • You may choose Go to EndNote or the Search button (the magnifying glass over a closing quotation mark) to insert references.
  • If you choose Go to EndNote, click Go to EndNote and you will be taken to your EndNote library. Highlight the reference(s) you want to insert, then click the Insert Citatoin button (the closing quotation mark icon on the top), your reference(s) will be inserted. The corresponding reference(s) will be listed beneath References in the style you chose. You may change the style at any time as long as you have not converted the document to plain text.
  • If you choose the Search option, click on the Search button (the magnifying glass over a closing quotation mark). A search box will be popped up. Enter search terms and the references containing the terms will be retrieved. Highlight the reference(s) you want to insert, then click the Insert button at the bottom of the popup window. Your reference(s) will be inserted. The corresponding reference(s) will be listed beneath References in the style you chose. You may change the style at any time as long as you have not converted the document to plain text.

Tutorials

How to create a library

  • Launch the EndNote program
  • Under the File menu, click New
  • You will be prompted to the New Reference Library popup window.
  • Give a unique name to the library. I usually name a library by project.
  • Make sure you save the library in a directory that is separate from where the EndNote programs stays.
  • Click on the Save button.
  • Your brand new library (with no reference added yet) is now ready.
