Google versus Google Scholar

Google searches general web content, while Google Scholar focuses on academic sources, which are more likely to have undergone review processes.

    • General internet search engine, finds a wide variety of web pages.
    • Understand the difference between general web search and academic search.
    • Optimise search parameters using Google tools and filters.
    • Apply the TRAAP Test (Timeliness, Relevance, Authority, Accuracy, Purpose) to evaluate sources.
  • Using Google Scholar:

    • Searches scholarly literature, including articles, theses, books, and abstracts.
    • Set up to include UWC Library access.
    • Use advanced search features to find scholarly articles.
    • Utilise "My Library" to bookmark and manage resources.

Practical Tips:

  • Always use Google Scholar for academic research to ensure the credibility of sources.
  • Use Google to get a general understanding of a topic, then switch to scholarly databases for in-depth research.
  • Always evaluate your sources for credibility. Use of the TRAAP Test to ensure reliability of information.
  • Bookmark important articles in Google Scholar for easy reference later.
