What is an Open Educational Resource?

Open Education is an approach that encourages the open sharing of educational materials, research and data.  This is achieved through Creative Commons licenses which stipulate how others may use texts and resources.  Such openness enables the ability of users such as teachers and students to repurpose and distribute learning materials.

OER Commons is a public digital library of open educational resources. Explore, create, and collaborate with educators around the world to improve curriculum.

Open Textbook Library

Textbooks in the Open Textbook Library are considered open because they are free to use and distribute, and are licensed to be freely adapted or changed with proper attribution.

DOAJ

The Directory of Open Access Journals is a collection of over 10,000 publications, aimed at creating a comprehensive index of high quality Open Access journals. Journals which best exemplify openness and quality are awarded the DOAJ Seal.

Creative Commons Search

Creative Commons Search is a tool that searches several sources (Flickr, Rijksmuseum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, etc.) for images, music, video, and other media protected under a Creative Commons Licence.

European Union Open Data Portal

Over 8,000 searchable datasets from the European Union. Data can be browsed by subject or visualized using applications.

Education Statistics

OECD's annual Education at a Glance looks at who participates in education, what is spent on it, how education systems operate and the results achieved. The latter includes indicators on a wide range of outcomes, from comparisons of students’ performance in key subject areas to the impact of education on earnings and on adults’ chances of employment.
