This is a self-learning tutorial that addresses each stage of the research process, including: identifying information needs; selecting sources; finding high-quality, scholarly information; evaluating information; and using information responsibly.

How to use Ukwazi (The Basics)

uKwazi connects you with the materials for your studies and research. 

The short video tutorial below demonstrates the basics of using uKwazi, your information resource discovery tool. What you learn in this tutorial will save you stress and time and also equip you to easily source relevant information resources to enable your learning.

Here's a step-by-step summary, as dicussed in the video resource:

Accessing uKwazi

  • Go to the UWC Library homepage: lib.uwc.ac.za
  • Find the uKwazi search box on the homepage
  • Enter search terms (title, keywords, or author's name)

Keyword Search and Results

  • Example search: "Marikana Massacre"
  • Results include books, journal articles, e-book chapters, digital media files, etc.

Filtering Results

  • Use filters to find specific resource types (e.g., printed books) and availability
  • Apply filters for availability (e.g., "Held by Library") and resource type (e.g., "Books" or "Articles" or "e-Books")
  • Note the book's location and call / shelf number in the library

Generating and Managing Citations (directly from uKwazi)

  • Use the citation option to generate citations in various styles
  • Copy citations to the clipboard for use in assignments and research

Signing into uKwazi

  • Sign in with UWC login details to manage your library profile
  • Access personal records, holds, favorites, and search history
  • Pin important records for easy access later
