Information Literacy Tutorial: C. Using the Library

A module-based information literacy tutorial that addresses each stage of the research process, including selecting a topic, identifying information needs, selecting sources, locating information, evaluating information, and citing sources.

How do I know what's in the Library?

The Library has a searchable catalogue called SMARTSEARCH.

Use SmartSearch to find the following:

1. Books, print journals, multimedia (DVDs, videos) and theses in the library
2. Online journal articles (e-journals found in databases)
3. UWC research publications deposited in the UWC Research Repository

Click here to view the 5 minute demonstration of how to use SmartSearch.

  • SMARTSEARCH is the platform for looking up information.  The search boxes on the Library homepage offer you a quick start with Smartsearch. Especially if you're off campus, please note that you should ideally sign in before using SmartSearch.
  • A-Z List of Databases or eJournals
  • eBooks
  • UWC Research Repository and the UWC Electronic Thesis and Dissertation collection
  • Instructions for Off-campus users

  • "Ask a Librarian": Post your question and chat online with our Reference Librarian

The Library Website is also where you'll find current training schedules and news of recent developments.

If the Library does not have a particular item you need, use the online inter-library loan request forms

You may also use the Feedback form on the homepage to make suggestions or report faults.  You will receive a response within 24 hours.

Simple Library Rules

Please be considerate of your fellow library users - don't make noise and don't leave litter.

  • Your student card gives you access to the library and also serves as a membership card
  • Library materials are not issued to anyone without a valid student card
  • A student card is not transferable. Nor may you share your UWC login information with others
  • Cellphones should be switched to silent mode
  • Food and drinks should not be consumed in the library, except for liquids from spill-proof bottles
  • A user is liable for any damage to or loss of library items issued on his/her membership card.
  • All items borrowed must be returned to the library
  • Any fines incurred for late return must be paid
  • Failure to return library items at the end of a year will lead to embargo on examination results and students may not graduate if they do not have a clean library record.
  • Computer workstations are made available to registered library users for the purpose of furthering their academic studies.
  • Use of Library computer workstations for purposes other than those intended may result in users forfeiting their library privileges.
